Victorian Steampunk Shoe Sculptures By Costa Magarakis

Costa Magarakis is a Greek-born, Tel Aviv-based artist working with different kinds of mediums and specializing in sculptures. Inspired by the Victorian era and Jules Verne’s science fiction novels, he creates surreal steampunk shoe sculptures that have a story to tell.

His heeled figurines combine mythology, religion, and science with modern symbols and icons and depict grotesque imagery of surreal machines and impossible worlds.

“I often find archetypes in old children’s books and toys. I am attracted to things that evoke memories from childhood. The grotesque and the unknown are all important themes in the body of my work. I try to express something from my inner mind”, the artist states.

Although Costa’s creations look sculpted in real, old shoes, they are actually made of reinforced stone hard resin or high-quality fiberglass and each shoe undergoes a long, special process that will make it suitable for molding.
