German photographer Stephan Zirwes specialises in taking aerial photographs from helicopters and using drones. His series entitled ‘Pools’ contain photos of real pools from around southern Germany captured from a helicopter using a high-resolution camera with 60 million megapixels. Using Photoshop, he expanded the pools and removed distracting elements to focus our attention fully on the pools.
Viewed from above, the panorama changes and offers details which can not be seen from the ground. Zirwes’ swimming pools seem to be abstract shots of geometric shapes and strange designs where the clear water is always in the spotlight.
Actually, this project is a study regarding water, the primary resource for life on our planet. It aims to make us reconsider the waste of if for entertainment instead of sustenance.
‘In most regions of the world these pools are reserved for private usage and are a massive waste of drinking water. Public pools can still be a symbol for the importance that water should be free and accessible to everyone.’
